The DE-112 Ho RDC-2 Rail Diesel Car (RDC) is a vintage piece of rolling stock that was primarily used for commuter and short-haul freight services in Pennsylvania. Here are the pros and cons of buying one:
Pros:1. Unique and historic: The DE-112 Ho RDC-2 is a rare and historical piece of railway equipment, offering a unique investment opportunity.
2. Self-contained: As a diesel-electric multiple unit, the RDC is self-powered and does not require a locomotive, making it more flexible and cost-effective for short-haul operations.
3. Compact size: The RDC's compact design allows it to navigate tight curves and negotiate tracks that larger equipment may struggle with.
4. Customizable: With multiple configurations available, the RDC can be adapted to various passenger or freight service needs.
Cons:1. Age and maintenance: Given the age of the RDC, extensive maintenance and restoration work may be required, which could be costly and time-consuming.
2. Limited use: The RDC's size and design may limit its usefulness for long-haul freight or high-speed passenger services.
3. Availability: Finding a DE-112 Ho RDC-2 in good condition for purchase may be challenging due to their rarity and the demand for them among collectors and rail enthusiasts.
4. Compliance: Ensuring the RDC meets current safety regulations (such as the Pennsylvania TLC standards) could be a complex and costly process.
Conclusion:Buying a DE-112 Ho RDC-2 can be an exciting investment for rail enthusiasts and collectors, offering a unique and historical piece of rolling stock. However, potential buyers should be aware of the maintenance, compliance, and limited use considerations associated with these vintage diesel cars. It is essential to carefully research the condition and history of any RDC before making a purchase, and to have a clear understanding of the costs and time commitment involved in restoring and maintaining the vehicle.
Recommendation:For those interested in owning a DE-112 Ho RDC-2, it is recommended to seek out a well-maintained example that meets current safety regulations and has a clear service history. Prospective buyers should also consider the intended use of the RDC and ensure it is suitable for their needs, whether that be for passenger service, freight operations, or as a collector's item. Consulting with rail preservation societies, restoration specialists, and fellow enthusiasts can help potential buyers make an informed decision.
All Brass sales are final and AS-IS. All Brass Locos tend to need a little TLC no matter what their condition, especially older model's such as this, but she has really good bones. It just does not get any better than this. From Big Steam to Passenger Equipment Gas Turbines.
Virtually untouched/new old stock and always stored in a dry climate. I am representing an extensive Brass collection on consignment. There is most likely a gearing/mesh issue that needs to be worked out and then it will run fine. This BUDD RDC2 does not run, but the motor turn in both directions.
Its a little noisy but will smooth out with lubrication and adjustment. I regularly accept consignments and purchase collections. All Brass Sales are sold AS-IS. The box has light wear marks from storage.
